TRIATHLON Zimbabwe held a cancer awareness event, the Zimworx Pink Triathlon, at Harare’s Mt Pleasant Pool on Sunday with all proceeds going towards fighting breast cancer.
The event, a brainchild of former Judo Association of Zimbabwe president and cancer survivor, Debi Jeans, has been running for over a decade.
“We had the most amazing turnout yesterday (Sunday), everyone who came, supported, sponsored, officiated, laughed, shared, ran, swam and cycled, you made the difference,” said Jeans.
“Everybody is on the bandwagon, raising money for cancer, but the main important thing is that we give voice time to awareness to the pink cause and everything, but my own feeling is that we don’t really understand what it’s about.”
Triathlon Zimbabwe vice-president Pam Fulton said the level of support for the worthy cause has been overwhelming.
“Pink day went well once again. This is a cancer awareness event and a fundraiser for breast cancer. This initiative came from Debi Jeans and has been running for at least 15 years,” Fulton told NewsDay Sport.
“We have so many new faces supporting our event and supporting those who are fighting cancer and those who have survived cancer.”
Some of the partners who came on board included The Cancer Association of Zimbabwe, Dulux Zimbabwe, Cimas iGo, Schweppes Zimbabwe Limited, Safeguard Zimbabwe, Evolution Insurance Company Zimbabwe, Zim Cycles, Pearlenta Nutri-Active and The Draught Man, among many others.

“It's a fun event where everyone dresses up in pink fun outfits, and all proceeds go to breast cancer,” added Fulton.
She also shared some of the events to look forward to this season.
“The season kicked off on September 17, so this is our second event of the season. Our selection races start on October 22 at Mt Pleasant Pool,” she said.
“Later in the year, we are holding races at Springvale House in Marondera and our regular Penhalonga event in December.”
