Delta’s bursary scheme uplifts A-Level, varsity learners

Delta Corporation spokesperson Patricia Murambinda

Zimbabwe’s largest beverage maker Delta Corporation on Wednesday gave away bursaries to 50 students pursuing university and Advanced Level studies.

Delta Corporation spokesperson Patricia Murambinda said the company aspires for a better world by contributing to making a difference in the communities that it operates in.

It introduced the bursary scheme 20 years ago and so far, it has benefitted 2 000 students.

“The company believes in a brighter, better, thriving, and growing society and today something new has come to fulfil this aspiration in the bursary scheme community and the company is proud of it. Delta has been involved in assisting students as a means of enhancing capacity and capability for less privileged students for 20 years,” Murambinda said at a function held at Mandel Training Centre in Harare.

The children who are sponsored are selected by virtue of outstanding results and are mostly from under-privileged backgrounds and are selected from different provinces with the help of the Primary and Secondary Education ministry.

Some are children of the company’s junior employees.

The bursaries provide for school fees, uniforms, stationery allowance as well as pocket money.

“Delta runs a vibrant education assistance programme which includes this school bursaries program which commands close to US$100 000 annually. To date close to 2 000 students have benefited from the program over the years amounting to US$2million investment.”

She added: “Delta has a total of 100 students benefiting from the programme from A-Level up to university this year and these students have been selected with the help of the Primary and Secondary Education ministry.”

“The bursary scheme programme is also complemented by Delta Technical Institute (DTI) that develops artisans for the group from Advanced Level students. The DTI has seen over 2 000 artisans graduate, and these have been absorbed in various jobs within the organisation.”

There was a deliberate focus on the girl child who has been disadvantaged over the past years, Murambinda said.

“We try as much as possible to give the girl child a fair opportunity to be supported by the programme because the girl child has been disadvantaged quite a lot for the past years, not only in our country but all over the world.”
