HARARE City Council has urged private land developers to consult the local authority before putting up structures around the Museum of African Liberation area in Warren Park, Harare.
Touring the museum area on Tuesday this week, mayor Jacob Mafume said the city welcomed development, but it should be structured in line with local authority by-laws.
He encouraged developers to consult city fathers before wasting millions on unapproved projects.
“What you do is you come to the council, you lay out all the plans then we tell you that, ‘for you to build this, this will be your access road, this will be your take-off point, and this is the traffic you are assembling’,” Mafume said.
“In other words, it’s a complementary process. And when you do this, there has to be joint planning, and that’s why we are here. If you are doing a massive development like this, there are things that you also must contribute to the cost.”
Added Mafume: “In other words, our engineers and our town planners should give you proportions of the road you must widen, the sewage pipes that you must develop and widen because definitely looking at this area, it means you’ll have more traffic. You’ll need to expand the sewage pipes that are being used in the locality so that they won’t frequently burst.”
