ZLHR calls out govt on evictions

"Forced evictions and homelessness intensify social conflict and inequality and invariably effectless privileged people, vulnerable members and sectors of society.

The Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR) has bemoaned the gruesome eviction and displacements of alleged illegal settlers across the country saying the act is grossly inhuman and unjustifiable.

In a statement issued on Tuesday to coincide with commemorations of the World Day of Social Justice, the ZLHR said government should realise that forced eviction is a gross violation of human rights, in particular the right to shelter guaranteed in Section 28 of the constitution and freedom from arbitrary eviction enshrined in section 74 of the Constitution.

"Forced evictions and homelessness intensify social conflict and inequality and invariably effectless privileged people, vulnerable members and sectors of society.

"It is vital for the government to urgently halt the forced evictions and ensure the protection of several internally displaced people and other vulnerable groups should take remedial action to protect the rights provided in the constitution and the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights."

ZLHR urged other members of society to stand in solidarity with the victims of  the arbitrary evictions.
