THE Bulawayo City Council (BCC) recently donated 16 cattle carcasses seized by the police from rustlers to Chipangali Wildlife Orphanage to promote the centre’s activities.

It was revealed in the latest council meeting that the donation was in honour of Chipangali’s conservation efforts.

The BCC said the director of housing and community services Dictor Khumalo had reported to the environmental management and engineering services committee on the issue of 17 heads of cattle that had been intercepted by the police.

“On the 7th of February 2024, a total of 17 cattle were illegally brought to Bulawayo from Filabusi and were handed over to our Gum Plantation pond by the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), Stock Theft and the Veterinary Services,” the minutes said.

“The animals were intercepted by the police while being transported by Edmore Bhibhi and Farai Pamkani both from Emganwini suburb in Bulawayo.”

According to the council minutes, the ZRP and Veterinary Services Department officials had requested that the cattle be isolated and kept at the council ponds as further investigations were being carried out.

The minutes added that one of the cattle was found dead the following day.

On February 13 this year, the Veterinary Services Department produced an Illegal Cattle Movement Destruction Order and all the beasts were shot dead.

The carcasses were donated to Chipangali Wildlife Orphanage. The cattle were valued at US$10 133,46 with US$9 955,68 being for live beasts and US$177,78 for the one that died.
