Don’t die like a mere man

We thank the Lord for having brought us this far. Indeed, His faithfulness no one can fathom. He is an awesome God and for me it is an immeasurable privilege to be called His son. I am so overwhelmed by His love.

'I have said you are gods, you are all sons of the Most High. But you will die like mere men” (Psalm 82:6). This is talking to ALL believers hence the expression” you are ALL sons.”

Happy New year!

We thank the Lord for having brought us this far. Indeed, His faithfulness no one can fathom. He is an awesome God and for me it is an immeasurable privilege to be called His son. I am so overwhelmed by His love.

He took me from the kingdom of darkness and brought me into the kingdom of Light. Whilst I was still neck-deep in sin, Christ died for me and you. What manner of love is this! It does not come as a surprise when Paul prays in the book of Ephesians that “God should open our eyes so that we will be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length and depth and height and to know the love of Christ which surpasses all knowledge”. God’s love is multi-dimensional.

As we start the year, so many of us have come up with “new year resolutions”, churches have already proclaimed themes for the year- This is the Year of Supernatural Abundance or The Year of Favor, or breakthroughs. Some have already declared a twenty or forty-day fast.

I see nothing wrong in principle. However, that alone will not produce the results that one may be looking for in 2024, unless you commit to certain disciplines during this year. By the second month some will already have abandoned those resolutions.

Unless you change the way you were in 2023, 2024 will just be a continuation of the previous year. You, have to intentionally design your identity based on your desired future self.

A new year gives us an opportunity to redefine our vision and purpose. We need to stretch our minds and heighten our standards. The degree of success we achieve, will always depend on the amount of desire we possess. Why settle for mediocrity? It takes a different mind set and a full comprehension of one’s identity in Christ. We are not ordinary people as believers and yet most of us still live natural lives when we are supposed to live supernatural lives. If your life is not supernatural, it is superficial.

As children of God we have to walk in dominion. Some of us fail to live in dominion. Solomon illustrates this point very well in the book of Ecclesiastes 10:7, “I have seen slaves on horseback while kings go on foot like slaves”.

It’s our choice. The bible states that “As a man thinks in his heart so is he (Proverbs 23:7). We are the product of our thoughts. We have no one to blame but ourselves. Life is about decisions. Decisions decide destiny. God has given all of us the gift of choice. We are where we are in life because that is exactly where we have decided to be. Unless we accept this reality, we will continue to blame other people or circumstances for our own failures.

God says in Deuteronomy 30:19, “I call heaven and earth as witnesses today against you, that I have set before you, life and death, blessing and cursing, therefore chose life that both you and your descendants may live”. God is giving you and I an opportunity to decide. However, as it is not enough, He goes on to give us a better option which is life. It is very sad that some of us still choose death and call it life.

One of the reasons we make such bad decisions is because we follow the crowd. At times we think that just because everyone is doing it we also have to do it. Just because everyone has a “smell house” you also want to have one because it is fashionable for a man to have an extra marital affair. Who told you that? Just because everyone cheats, lies and bribes, it is fine for you to do the same. These are lies from the devil. Never follow the crowd. A crowd will never follow a person who follows a crowd. Christ should be the example. Follow His way. He is the Way, the Truth and the Life. “There is a way which seems right to a person but its end is the way of death (Proverbs 14:12).

We should choose life so we don’t die like a mere man. I like the way Joshua puts it “If it seems evil to you to serve the Lord, choose for yourselves, this day, whom you will serve, whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the River, or the gods of the Armorites, in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord” (Joshua 24: 13-15).

There are three levels of life we can choose from. The first one is a life of grace, glory, dignity and honour. The second one is life of mediocrity, barely getting by and the last one is life of total defeat and confusion. It is our choice.

God wants you to prosper and He gives you and I power to create wealth (Deuteronomy 8:18). His Word tells us in 2 Corinthians 8:9, that though He was rich yet for your sake He became poor so that you might become rich. Financial prosperity is one of the blessings that comes with loving and serving the Lord.

Salvation is not just about forgiveness of sins. It’s a buffet meal which includes deliverance, divine, health, prosperity and protection. This is why Peter says “God has given us all things that pertain to life and godliness according to the knowledge of Him” (2 Peter 1:3). Our problem is the knowledge problem. God’s grace has already provided all these things for us however it takes our knowledge and faith to appropriate what He has already provided for you and I.

We have to believe in the integrity of God’s Word. He means what He says and He says what He means- “God is not man that He should lie nor son of man that He should repent. Has He said and will He not do? Or has He spoken, and will He not make good? (Numbers 23:19).

It is faith in God that will propel your life to greater altitudes. An awareness of God’s promises is very critical for every believer. Scripture defines the jurisdiction within which God operates. You need to hold on to God’s promises because God has exalted His Word above His name and forever His Word is established in heaven and so you can trust Him.

You have to believe what God’s Word says not just know it. This also requires meditation on the scriptures. You don’t just read the Bible like a novel. Take time to meditate on the Word of God. The Bible was not written for your mind but your heart.

You have to be fully persuaded like Abraham that God will honour His Word. Abraham at ninety- nine years staggered not on God’s Promise that He was going to be the father of many nations. As a believer you have to learn to walk on water. Unless you do that you will struggle to see a supernatural life.

From the promises you need to also understand God’s principles which you should apply to ensure that the promises manifest. You also have a role to play. You don’t just “claim and grab” and expect things to happen while you just sit back. Paul makes it clear that he who does not work shall not eat.

Finally, you can have abundant financial resources without being a believer but realise that the peace that comes with the financial blessings, only comes from God (Proverbs 10:22). There is a void every human being has that only Jesus can fill in your life.
