We can win the Champions League - Chigwida

NGEZI Platinum Stars defender Kudzai Chigwida believes his side can suprise everyone and go all the way to win the Caf Champions League next season.

NGEZI Platinum Stars defender Kudzai Chigwida believes his side can suprise everyone and go all the way to win the Caf Champions League next season.

Chigwida has been one of the most outstanding players during Ngezi Platinum Stars' fairy tale to their maiden league title this year.

It was unfortunate that he missed out on the Soccer Stars calendar, but he was certainly one of the top contenders this season.

The 28-year-old defender was voted the Players' Player of the year by his teammates at the club's annual awards a week and a half ago.

And after winning his first league title in his career Chigwida is looking forward to taking part in the Caf Champions where he says the team is not going as first timers or underdogs.

"We are not going there (Caf Champions League) as first timers, but we are going there to show that we deserve to be there and that we can compete at that level. We are not a small team because we have already proved that we are capable of achieving great things. Anything can happen and we can even shock the whole continent and end up as the champions," Chigwida said in an interview with Standardsport.

Chigwida has played in Africa before with Triangle back in 2019 after they won the Chibuku Super Cup and is hoping his experience and that of others can come in handy for the club.

Players like Nelson Chadya, Malvin Gaki, Qadr Amini, Delic Murimba and Farai Madhanaga among others have experience playing in Africa and can come in handy for the club next season.

Having played for Buffaloes and Triangle in the league, Chigwida is happy to have won his first domestic league title.

"I am very happy because I have been playing top-flight football for a long time, but I have never had the opportunity to win the league so its a big achievement for me and the  team. For us the target was always to win the league title from the first day we started to prepare for th season on December 12 last year," he said.

"I feel I did well on a personal level to help the team to win the league title. I scored four goals and won the Players’ Player of the Year award. This is a very special recognition for me because it means that my fellow teammates recognise my contribution to the success of the team but most importantly we achieved this through teamwork."

The Norton-bred star looks into the future, in as far as his career is concerned. "Now that I have won the league title the next target for me is to play for the national team. I hoped I would be among the Soccer Stars of the Year finalists this season, but it was not to be but I hope next year I will be able to make it there," he said.

Chigwida formed a formidable partnership at the back with Polite Moyo and Gareth Madhake.
