Letter from America: Luigi Mangione: a murderer becomes a hero!

Luigi  is 26 years old, a graduate of some Ivy League university with a Master’s degree in artificial intelligence.

Many years ago, during a school shooting spree, I attended a workshop conducted by the sheriff of Greenwood County in Greenwood, South Carolina.

“Suppose a student comes to your office, after an exam, stands in the door and asks if he passed your course, what is your response?” He introduced the subject matter with this impossible question.

“If you are honest and tell the boy (usually a boy) that he flunked (failed) the course, remember that he is standing in the door and that there is no way of escape on your part.” The sheriff made the issue complicated.

The point here is that there is something in American culture about taking the matter into one’s hands, if the law and society fail.

Luigi Mangione

Luigi  is 26 years old, a graduate of some Ivy League university with a Master’s degree in artificial intelligence. His Italian grandparents migrated from Italy, made something of themselves and are now the owners of three nursing homes.

Growing up in that situation, he was well aware of health care insurance company practices.

Apparently, there are two types of insurances, one for the wealthy is called the Cadillac option (covers congressmen and others) and the second one is the ordinary one which fits into a puzzle, and has sections from A-D.

Luigi, an athletic young man suffered from a spine injury and apparently found himself at the mercy of those dragons who interpret the A-D puzzle. He became impotent as well.

I have not met a single person who does not have some beef with the insurance companies. My wife went to the emergency hospital.

The bill was over US$1 200. The insurance refused to pay.

Another witness, from United Insurance (the largest) said that a boy born with a hermaphroditic condition went into surgery. Halfway through the surgery, the company paid for only half the procedures.

The doctor had to proceed without payment.

United Insurance refused payment for one third of its customer applications.

Meanwhile, Brian Thompson, its chief of operations was paid US$10 million (2020) US$20,6m (2022) and US$2,8m in 2023.

One doctor at this same company signed rejection letters for 10 000 customers in one year. He did not even read the applications. Apparently, they simply reject every tenth application.

In addition to that, Brain and two of his colleagues sold in-house company shares of US$124 million. The Federal Bureau of Investigations thought that this was inside trading, a criminal offence.

Luigi, in his manifesto, sees clearly that these men like Brain are parasites, getting fat at the expense of the sick. He, Luigi was going to take matters into his own hands and “do something about” a very typical part of American culture.

So, he ambushed Brian at a health insurance conference and shot him twice in the back.

A hero

While the authorities were obliged to condemn the shooting, they were overwhelmed by the goodwill that flooded the shadow media.

Anybody who repeats Luigi’s words, “Deny, Defend, Depose,” words used by insurance companies can find himself locked up.

Nevertheless, Senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren have expressed some guarded sympathy for Luigi’s actions.

Ken Klipstein, in another typical American fashion, has provided a go-fund me platform for Luigi. As we go to press, US$135 000 is in the bank.

Peak Design, which made Luigi’s carry bag was overwhelmed by orders. The bag costs US$32.

However, when customers found out that the chief officer at Peak Design had offered to reveal Luigi’s name to the authorities without a warrant, customers began returning the orders in anger.

The manager is facing dismissal. In any case, the company may have to close shop and rebrand as its “Judas” shares have collapsed.

A person at McDonalds restaurant in Altoona, Pennsylvania, who phoned the police about Luigi is now under police protection and may have to change his identity.

MacDonalds has suffered severe customer boycotts. Meanwhile, a Hardees restaurant across the street, has sold out its “whoppers” after it put up a sign disassociating itself with Luigi’s betrayal.

Surprise of surprises — the Altoona Police Station has received threats from irate citizens for betraying Luigi.

As a result, it would be unthinkable if Congress did not open hearings on United Health Industries. This is how the American system of checks and balances works.
