An affordable up-market private school has opened its doors in Chitungwiza to offer well-rounded education premised on science and practical subjects, while offering “elite” sporting disciplines and art education.

Situated in Zengeza 5 Extension, Cornerstone has a primary and high school. It also offers early childhood education.
“We opened this term and our standing vision is to reach out to these communities offering them well-rounded education, grounded in sciences and practical orientation,” said Angella Katsuwa the junior school head.
“We are innovative and globally-oriented and our keen desire is to produce a wholesome product fit for this modern Zimbabwe as well.
“Thus the adoption of information and communication technologies from junior school up to high school is meant to spur our lesson delivery methods.”
The distinguished educationist was optimistic that her experience and the school’s vision will ensure fruitful results for the Chitungwiza community and the nation at large.

The head, who scooped various awards in academic and sporting merits, including the Education ministry’s secretary award in 2009 in her 35-year career, said e-learning programmes will add on to the school policy of child-centred teacher and book ratio to achieve good yields.
While it is still in its infancy, the school has attracted many students from other private and public chools in Chitungwiza.
“At times we feel cheated by these private schools, especially when last year I paid fees for my child. I even bought uniforms for my daughter to start this term at one private school, only to be notified the school closed,” said one parent who refused to be named. “I panicked as it was difficult to find a new school in Chitungwiza. But I am hopeful that Cornerstone will offer the best and given what I have seen in terms of facilities and teacher-pupil ratio, I am confident.”
Cricket, hockey, soccer and basketball are some of the sporting activities on offer, while the head, a cricket fanatic is also a cricket gold medal-award winner.
A swimming pool is still under construction, including other blocks as the school is also geared towards offering boarding facilities. Katsuwa added that music and art were also key in their curricular, hence the replica of the Great Zimbabwe monuments in its security walls.
She added the strict recruitment policy had ensured that all teachers were qualified and with degrees.
School owner Elizabeth Mukuwane, a former child rights activist, said pupils’ safety was key, hence all staff members, including ground members are vetted and trained in handling children.
