Tsholotsho community launches dams desiltation programme

Nkululeko Sibanda

TSHOLOTSHO Rural District Council has channelled Campfire proceeds towards desilting dams in the district of dams amid a growing water crisis in the area.

The council’s chief executive Nkululeko Sibanda said US$45 000 was earmarked for the programme.

“We started the process of scooping dams in November. Tsholotsho has water challenges. We rely on underground water. If these dams are scooped, it will take off pressure from underground water and minimise human-wildlife conflict,” Sibanda said.

“Elephants were destroying boreholes in search of water. We channelled about US$5 000 for each dam in the wards. Dams in wards 2, 5, 8, 9, 7 and 21 are already done and some have water now. US$45 000 was allocated towards the programme.”

He said they had hoped to finish the project before year end.

“As we speak, elephants have since gone back to Hwange National Park because there is now water in the dams.

“We have also done Ilala Dam in ward 7 located towards Hwange National Park,’’ Sibanda said.
