Govt commits to assisting persons with disabilities

INDUSTRY and Commerce deputy minister, Rajeshkumar Modi says the government is committed to ensuring people with disabilities are involved in all processes of development in the country.

He was speaking on Thursday at the Bulawayo Metropolitan Province commemoration of International Day for People with Disabilities.

“The government of Zimbabwe is committed to ensuring the full participation of persons with disabilities in all processes of development.

“The National Development Strategy 1 (NDS1) acknowledges disability as a cross-cutting inter-disciplinary issue,” Modi said.

The theme for this year’s commemoration was, Transformative solutions for inclusive development: the role of innovation in fuelling an accessible and equitable world.

He added that the country should remove barriers to full inclusion and participation of persons with disabilities.

“We need to hold ourselves accountable for commitment towards mainstreaming disabilities in all dimensions of development and sustain this momentum,” he said.

Modi noted that disability should be included in national development plans.

“The theme for this year’s commemorations promotes innovation for disabilities inclusive development in employment. The theme also allows evaluating ways and how assistive technology can increase accessibility to employment and be mainstreamed in the workplace,” he said.

Modi said the government of Zimbabwe was dedicated to undertaking efforts and exercising sensitivity to disabilities through the inclusion of persons with disabilities in all developmental plans.

“Government’s commitment is evident in the fields of inclusive education, physical rehabilitation and vocational training and these processes ensure that persons with disabilities become more independent and enjoy the highest quality of life,” Modi said.
