MP to bless 20 schools with boreholes

LUVEVE/COWDRAY Park legislator Stella Ndlovu is targeting to drill about 20 boreholes in her constituency to provide enough water to schools.

Ndlovu told Southern Eye that she decided to initiate the borehole drilling venture after she was notified by school authorities of the water challenges affecting schools.

“I was approached by school authorities who told me that they owe millions of dollars to the city council in water consumption charges.

“So we started this programme of drilling boreholes and there are about 20 schools in the constituency. We want every school to have its own solar-powered borehole,’’ she said.

“So far we started with three boreholes at Luveve, Inzwananzi primary schools and the Roman Catholic Church. We also target to drill additional four boreholes before the end of April.”

Ndlovu said donors are funding the programme and one of the donors is a Bulawayo resident doing corporate social responsibility.

“Our biggest challenge is the Cowdray Park area where underground water is contaminated. We will have challenges in proceeding with the programme there.

“We drilled one borehole at Cowdray Park Primary and discovered that it was contaminated. We want these boreholes to be used for gardening purposes so that the schools are able to sell vegetables,’’ the legislator added.

Bulawayo City Council decommissioned the Umzingwane dam last year due to low water levels and has since introduced a 72-hour water rationing regime to preserve water.
