Safari operator loses US$132 000 to employee

The court heard that sometime in February 2020, the company employed a new bookkeeper, Sandra Mackay Theresa to issue petty cash to staff.

A 42-YEAR-OLD employee at Zambezi Cruise and Safaris Zimbabwe yesterday appeared at the Harare Magistrates Court charged with duping his employer of US$132 733.

Magistrate Marehwanazvo Gofa granted the suspect, Byron Rocher US$500 bail.

The complainant is  Dunhuramambo [Private] Limited, trading as Zambezi Cruise and Safaris Zimbabwe.

The court heard that sometime in February 2020, the company employed a new bookkeeper, Sandra Mackay Theresa to issue petty cash to staff.

Rocher, who was employed as a marketing consultant, countersigned every payment made. It is the State’s case that Rocher hatched a plan to abuse his position of authority.

According to the State, during the period extending from  November 17, 2020 to December 31, 2022, Rocher generated several petty cash requests and submitted them to the bookkeeper for processing.

The bookkeeper processed the fraudulent payments without questioning Rocher, her immediate supervisor.

Rocher also made the safari operator’s sister company in South Africa to refund him for various expenses incurred in that country knowing that he was not entitled to that money.

The offence came to light when the complainant employed an accountant.
