China celebrates National Day, amid heightened Sino-Zim relations

Relations between Zimbabwe and the People’s Republic of China are of mutual benefit and the Asian nation is prepared to continue supporting the former’s economic prospects, Chinese ambassador to Zimbabwe Zhou Ding has said.

Chinese citizens in the country celebrated the 74th anniversary of their country’s founding, a day also known as the National China day, in Harare on Friday.

Speaking at the ceremony, Ding said Zimbabwe and China have enjoyed cordial bilateral relations since time immemorial.

“China can always count on Zimbabwe on issues that concern China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and other core interests,” said Ding.

“Upholding the principles of mutual respect and win-win results, our two countries have enjoyed sound relations across the board.”

Ding also said that the Chinese private sector has played an enormous role in the resuscitation of the Zimbabwean economy.

“Chinese companies’ investment has helped Zimbabwe become a significant part of global new energy supply chains, and will soon make Zimbabwe a major steel producer,” he said, adding:

“Our embassy here in Harare will continue to serve as a bridge in promoting Zimbabwe’s industrialization, economic diversification, and facilitating people to people exchanges between our two countries.”

Speaking at the same occasion, acting foreign affairs minister, Amon Murwira commended the relationship between the two nations.

“Today, just over 43 years after the establishment of diplomatic relations between Zimbabwe and the People's Republic of China, the bilateral relations have been tried and tested and they have endured. The longstanding and enduring friendship between Zimbabwe and China is not just rooted in the past but also in shared values, respect for each other and by a common desire to build a shared future of joint prosperity through active cooperation and equally as cooperating partners in line with our Comprehensive Strategic Partnership of cooperation,” he said.

Delegates from different countries with embassies in Zimbabwe also attended the event which was punctuated by music performances.
