SOUTH African police officers stationed at the Beitbridge Border Post on Tuesday arrested a male suspect found driving a suspected stolen vehicle.
The vehicle, a late model Mercedes Benz believed to have been stolen from KwaThema near Johannesburg, has been seized.
This is the third vehicle theft incident to be reported in as many days.
In a statement, South African Police Services (Saps) Limpopo Province spokesman Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said the vehicle was spotted at a service station during a stop and search exercise.
"On Tuesday, 16 July 2024 at about 02:00, police members of Beitbridge Port of Entry(POE) were busy conducting a stop and search operation along the N1 north when a white Mercedes Benz motor vehicle was stopped next to Shell Ultra City filling station," he said.
Police asked the yet to be identified driver for his driver's licence and vehicle documentation which he failed to produce. Instead police discovered three different sets of number plates. Investigations by the Vehicle Inspection and Safe Guarding Unit (VIS) discovered the car's owner to be in the Kwa-Thema Policing area in Gauteng province where the car was stolen early this month.
"The 36 -year-old male suspect was subsequently apprehended on the spot for possession of suspected stolen motor vehicle. Upon further investigation, police discovered that the suspect was in the country illegally and a charge of contravention of Immigration Act was also added while the suspected stolen motor vehicle seized during the arrest," said Ledwaba. The suspect is expected to appear before the Musina Magistrate Court today.
