The Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (Zacc) has engaged local authorities in the fight against corruption.
This was revealed by Zacc commissioner Jessie Majome during a three-day integrity workshop for Matabeleland South local authorities held in Bulawayo.
Majome encouraged local authorities to establish integrity committees.
“I am aware that the playing of a whistle-blower role by the integrity committees, as one of its important roles, faces the spectre of victimisation which has been affecting the flow of information on corruption to Zacc and the Zimbabwe Republic Police,” Majome said.
“To date we have established 86 integrity committees and the present congregation will bring it to 96.”
Majome emphasised the need for stiff penalties against people accused of victimising whistleblowers.
“Similar fears have also resulted in witnesses in court cases sometimes turning hostile, to the prejudice of successful prosecution.” — NIZBERT MOYO
