Football legends still dishing it out

The Legends and Coaches team after their game against Delta Beverages FC

Stanford ‘Stix’ Mtizwa might have retired 20 or so years ago but the Caps United great still has that magical touch that made him a household name on the Zimbabwe football scene.

Mtizwa is one of the football greats and coaches who make-up the legends and coaches team that week-in-and week-out is entertaining football fans around town.

The team is run under the auspices of the Soccer Coaches Union of Zimbabwe of which Moses Chunga is the president, deputised by Nesbert Saruchera with Newsome Mutema, the secretary general and Jackson Munyaka, the organizing secretary.

The team was in action at GMB Stadium and those who watched it play agree that some of the players like Eddie Nyika can still play Premiership football if given the chance considering the quality of players in the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League.

“ This Eddie Nyika guy is still too good. I think he is good enough to play for Caps United. He is far much better than some or maybe most of the players they have,” commented football fan Tatenda Feremango after watching Nyika help the Legends draw 2-2 with Delta Beverages FC.

Although time has moved on, Masimba Dinyero, the 1989 Castle Soccer Star of the Year, still has those deft touches and defence splitting passes which made him one of the best footballers of his generation.

The former Black Mambas midfielder and 1998 Caf Champions League finalist with Dynamos also still has that energy to last the entire 90 minutes of the game.

For the likes of Patridge Muskwe, Albert Mabika, Tonderai Marume, Rowan Nenzou, Ralph Kawondera, William Chari, and Newsome Mutema, football goers admit that they are still good and trying their best but evidence of age cannot be hidden especially in their speed with the ball.

Molded around the once popular George Shaya X1, Munyaka says they are considering going on a nationwide tour. “We want to rekindle the days we used to travel and play in Bulawayo which we stopped due to Covid-19,” says Munyaka.

Coach Chunga had a lighter moment to share even though it did not concern his team’s performance. “You guys  who never played football and have never coached anywhere are a problem. How can you write that a coach should be fired because he did not do this and that. Since when did you become coach assessors ?,” Chunga jokingly directed his question to soccer reporters.

Chunga also has Nelson Matongorere and Gift Makoni in his coaching set up. The team — this afternoon — plays Delta Beverages FC in the return leg at the same venue of GMB Stadium.
