THE Highlanders fundraising event held at the team’s sports club in Bulawayo on Sunday, raised close to US$6 000, as they sought to put together the amount required to pay off the fine imposed on the club for crowd trouble at Wadzanayi Stadium on September 22.
Highlanders were fined US$6 000 for the unruly behaviour of their supporters in the abandoned Chibuku Super Cup quarter-final clash against Simba Bhora at Wadzanayi last month.
Simba Bhora were also fined the same amount but Highlanders fans were not happy and on Sunday organised a fund-raising activity at the clubhouse and snubbed the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League match against ZPC Kariba at Barbourfields Stadium.
Highlanders won the match 2-0.
The fans said they would rather pay the gate charges for the BF game at the clubhouse to help the club pay the fine.
The activity was sanctioned by the club and cleared by the police.
Highlanders’ executive treasurer Israel Moyo yesterday said the fans raised US$5 974 with 1593 fans paying the BF rest of the ground fee of US$3 to raise $4 779, while for the wings, 153 fans paid US$5 and US$765 was raised.
Those who paid for the VIP tickets were 39 and the club got US$390 while two people donated US$40.

Moyo said the South African chapter of the fans have reportedly come up with R10 990 with the Harare chapter raising US$600 and the Victoria Falls chapter, US$317.

Highlanders, indicted by the PSL for causing abandonment of the Chibuku Super Cup tie, await judgment on the case, which was heard by the league’s tribunal last Wednesday.
