Another Nyamukondiwa golf starlet emerges

Tafadzwa Nyamukondiwa

First it was Tafadzwa Nyamukondiwa, now a pro-golfer in South Africa, then came Margaret Nyamukondiwa, who is playing collegiate golf in the US and now 9-year-old Tawananyasha has become the latest Nyamukondiwa sibling to grace the Zimbabwean golf scene.

At such a tender age, Tawananyasha is already a three-time winner on the Mutupo/Isibongo golf series individual contest and last of his wins coming at the season opening event, which was held at Royal Harare Golf Club on February 7.

Tawananyasha, was representing the Dziva totem who finished overall third on the day, behind the Moyo and Shumba totems.

“I feel great to have won the Mutupo Golf Tournament and I would like to thank my playing partners for playing with me and also the sponsors Proton, Surrey and Lake Harvest for supporting this event,” the Emerald Hill Primary School Grade Four student said.

“It was not a difficult tournament but the course was a bit challenging at first but I did well at the end. I started playing golf when I was three after I saw my brother and sisters playing. They help me a lot with my game and one day I want to reach the stage where they are. My favourite golf player is Tiger Woods.”

Older siblings Tafadzwa and Margaret won a lot on the local and international stages in their careers — it awaits to be seen how Tawananyasha will fare, following in her brother and sister’s big shoes.

The father of the three golfers Tawanda Nyamukondiwa expressed satisfaction at the progress that Tawananyasha has made in his young career so far.

“Tawananyasha is the third born following in the footsteps of the brother Tafadzwa and sister Margaret. His progress so far is very encouraging. Golf is a very complex game. It has a lot of ups and downs but so far so good I am happy he (Tawananyasha) is progressing very well. We just have to see how everything will turn up as he continues to grow up.

“His notable success is on the Mutupo Isibongo golf platform where he has been exceptional. So far he has three wins which is remarkable for a boy his age competing with adults.

“He is playing junior tournaments and he has been doing very well. Considering his age he has been exposed to many international tournaments but let’s wait and see how he faresj at that stage. But he is definitely working hard and improving in this golf,” Tawanda said.

Impressed by Tawananyasha’s exploits, one of Mutupo Isibongo golf tournament sponsors Proton Bakers pledged to buy the young golfer a golf bag, give him one month supply of bread and are looking to sponsor him to participate in the Mutupo/Isibongo international edition to take place in Warwickshire, England in July.

"This is what we love to see as the sponsors, young golfers showcasing their talent at this platform. It is remarkable what Tawananyasha has achieved at such a young age playing against adults and it is our duty to make sure we help him reach his full potential. As Proton Bakers I think it is prudent for us to buy this young golfers a new golf bag, try to ensure we facilitate for him to play at Mutupo/Isibongo Golf tournament UK edition and also give him a month's supply of bread, courtesy of Proton Bakers," Proton Bakers chief sales officer Daniel Chipato said.
