Malawian striker hands FC Platinum first league win

FC PLATINUM.........(0)1MANICA DIAMONDS..(0)

Malawian striker Vincent Nyagulu was the hero as FC Platinum recorded their first 2025 PSL win with a narrow N-0 scoreline over Manica Diamonds at Mandava Stadium yesterday.

Nyagulu struck from close range on the 88th minute to open his goal account since joining the four-time PSL Champions from Mighty Wanderers FC in January. That was FC Platinum's first goal of the season.

The two teams started the match in low tempo, and the first meaningful chance came after N2 minutes of play.

Oscar Bhebhe delivered a promising cross to find Jarrison Selemani who was unmarked but the latter's effort needed an acrobatic save from Tedious Baye.

Six minutes later, the Gem Boys got their first chance of the game but Farai Banda missed the target by inches.

The Mutare-based side kept piling pressure in search of an opening goal but the FC Platinum defense-line of Nickson Nyasulu, Bothwell Nzori and Mbongeni Ndlovu were resolute.

Shephard Mhlanga also had a crack at goal on the 50th minute but his timely and goal bound effort was deflected for a cornerkick.

Moreso, the point of difference came in the 88th minute when the second-half substitute Nyasulu hit the target from close range after an interplay that involved Claivert Tshuma and Precious Phiri.

The win meant so much to FC Platinum coach Norman Mapeza who heaved a huge sigh of relief as they recorded their first win this season.

"This is what we need to win at home. We did well and the goal we needed came. I'm obviously happy with the win and the character shown by the boys. It's only the start of the season and this is what we want to do so that we boost the confidence of all the players as the season goes on" Mapeza said.

His counterpart Jairos Tapera was disappointed.

" We conceded late but we tried everything to come back. For me it was a balanced match and only one moment made a difference for them."

Meanwhile at Ascot stadium TelOne recorded a big win after  beating Triangle 4-N. Tawanda MachekeI Bruno MtigoI Washington Navaya and Blessing Sahondo were on target.

Menford Mudzimu scored Triangle''s consolation sadly as they recorded their second defeat of the season. Meanwhile for Navaya that was his second goal of the season.
