INTERNATIONAL artiste in residence at the National Gallery of Zimbabwe (NGZ) in Bulawayo for this year Piyali Ghosh has set the tone for a spellbinding exploration of the relationship between visual and performing arts.
Ghosh, who is on her inaugural journey to Africa is expected to unleash her much published project titled Rite of Passage, in collaboration with local performing artists amid efforts to show the solidarity between India and Zimbabwe.
Organised and coordinated by Fisani Nkomo, Rite of Passage, serves as a platform to showcase Ghosh’s multi-disciplinary art practice, ranging from a captivating solo exhibition to a series of dynamic live performances.
“The exciting programme is designed and aimed at building engagements with the audiences,” Ghosh said in a statement.
She regarded the act as an “exploration of time, existence, and the interplay between material and immaterial realities.”
Exclusively for invited guests, the exhibition commenced last Friday at the NGZ in Bulawayo and will be followed by a series of live performances under the banner of Rite of Passage.
“I look forward to an immersive and transformative experience,” Ghosh said.
“The performances will be conducted in collaboration with local performing and visual artistes such as Lewis of Drums of Peace, Umkhathi Theatre Works and Nkomo a renowned visual artist.”

The first performance was scheduled for the opening of the solo exhibition of Right of Passage last Friday followed by additional performances earmarked for Zimbabwean historic site, Khami Ruins on 30 May and at various venues across Bulawayo, including the Railway Museum.
Ghosh said: “In addition to the performances, there will be an interactive master class on June 4, which seeks to afford aspiring artists a unique opportunity to delve into the realm of performance art.”
“At the close of the master class, Nkomo will unveil the performance art Bulawayo initiative that aims to nurture the growth of performance art in Bulawayo and beyond.”
All activities associated with Ghosh’s residency, including performances and the master class would be documented by David Sling, a globally acclaimed company involved in still and motion picture.
