The 14th annual ZimHip Hop Awards brought a wave of excitement to the industry last Friday the 13th, defying any notions of ill fortune.
Held at the exclusive Royal Gates in Harare, the event saw a limited guest list of 100, with tickets selling out rapidly.
Inside, the venue buzzed with a mix of excitement and nerves. Artists dressed in their finest, their eyes scanning the crowd for familiar faces. Producers, DJs, and industry veterans mingled, discussing the year's biggest hits and debating the potential winners.
The stage, adorned with dazzling lights, was set. The red carpet, a sea of flashing cameras and eager fans, awaited the arrival of the stars.
As the ceremony began, the crowd erupted into cheers. Performances ignited the stage, showcasing the raw talent and creativity that defined the Zimbabwean hip hop scene. From seasoned veterans to rising stars, each act brought a unique flavour, captivating the audience.
Then came the awards. The tension in the room was palpable as each category was announced. The night was a celebration of Zimbabwean hip-hop, with several artists and industry figures receiving accolades.
With Voltz JT walking out the biggest winner with three awards namely Best Song Mkoma Brian, Best Album NOP Makoni, and People's choice it was left to which perfomance ran the night.
A surprise highlight of the evening was the presentation of the Best Promoter award to Noble Stylz. Initially hesitant, the renowned promoter was encouraged by fellow artists to accept the award, recognising his significant contributions to the hip-hop scene through initiatives like "Bars on Bars," which was a major highlight of the Shoko Festival.
The highlight of the night, however, was the presentation of the Lifetime Achievement Award to the legendary Take Fizzo. As he took to the stage, a wave of respect washed over the crowd. His music, a cornerstone of Zimbabwean hip hop, paved the way for generations of artistes.
The legendary producer Golden Fingers orchestrated a truly unforgettable performance, honouring 25 years of hits by the iconic Take Fizzo. From the classic Miss Makadini to the energesing Happy, the tribute showcased the enduring impact of Take Fizzo's music.
The entrance of Tehn Diamond to pay homage to Take Fizzo with a lifetime achievement award added a poignant touch to the evening.
Tehn Diamond has worked with Take Fizzo on the award winning album The Feeling Ain't Fair, under the banner Few Kings, which also included Junior Brown.
"You know these days I don't go out, but I had to come for you," Tehn Diamons told Take Fizzo as he handed over his gong.
Other notable winners included Holy Ten for Best Male Artist, Young Gemini for Best Female Artist.
The 2024 Zim Hip Hop Awards was more than just an awards ceremony; it was a celebration of a vibrant culture, a testament to the resilience and creativity of a generation of artists. It was a night to remember, a night that solidified the enduring power of Zimbabwean hip hop.
