Creatives undergo arts business training

The programme which commenced yesterday at Sabela Studios at the Zimbabwe Exhibition Centre (formerly ZITF) in Bulawayo will run until October 11. The workshop follows a similar one held in Harare in July.

stakeholders in the arts sector are attending a two-week arts business and digital distribution workshop aimed at empowering performing artistes from the Matabeleland region.

The programme which commenced yesterday at Sabela Studios at the Zimbabwe Exhibition Centre (formerly ZITF) in Bulawayo will run until October 11. The workshop follows a similar one held in Harare in July.

In a statement, project coordinator Taurai Moyo  said the workshop would develop the creatives by improving their digital and management skills as well as efficiency in service.

“The selected list of practitioners comprises 37 women and 23 men. Twenty seven applications from 67 individuals participating in the training were received from cultural and contemporary dance groups, dance associations and individuals from Bulawayo, Matabeleland North and South," Moyo said.

The ability to respond to the call was used to choose participants.

“Using application templates, demonstration of the existence of the group/association and demonstration of group or individual experience in problematic working areas in the dance sector were considered. Special consideration was given to women-led groups and people living with disability,” he explained.

Six groups from Matabeleland South, 12 from Bulawayo and one from Matabeleland North applied to take part in the capacity-building workshop. The five individual practitioners were from Bulawayo (three) Matabeleland North(one) and Matebeleland South (one).

Moyo said another key issue to be tackled at the workshop was exploitation of artistes by promoters and managers.

“The performing arts business and digital distribution project seeks to facilitate the recognition and standardisation of salaries and performance fees in the dance sector," he said.

“The workshop will include topics like artistic management and financial literacy, artistic freedom and decent work: that is benchmarking of salaries and performance fees, digital distribution, bookings and tour management.”

A session on tax compliance and obligations will also be conducted in partnership with the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority.
