SHURUGWI North legislator Joseph Mpasi has laid out his vision for the new year including setting up committees as he pushes for the development of the mining community.
“We have already set our vision for Shurugwi North and our initial programme was setting up a development committee involving all mines in the constituency,” Mpasi told Southern Eye.
“One of the aims of the development committee is to raise funds for road rehabilitation, drilling and rehabilitating boreholes as well as having new dip tanks and resuscitating those that are no longer working.”
Mpasi, who won on a Zanu PF ticket, said among his poverty alleviation programmes, he was fostering sustainable agricultural projects.
“I have partnered some Chinese agro-firms to do gardening and we have six points where we are establishing solarised boreholes which will be used for irrigation,” he said.
Mpasi encouraged people to work hard to improve their lives.
“We want our people to work in their fields and fight poverty so that they don’t rely on donations,” he said.
The legislator said he planned to improve the education sector in the area.

“I am donating cement to schools and we have already started building blocks at a number of schools, thus in ward 1 (Chitora) and ward 19 (Chironde),” he said.
“The idea of improving infrastructure at schools is that we want to retain qualified personnel and on a similar note I am facilitating the deployment of qualified teachers in our schools.”
Mpasi said they had set up a development committee which was in divisions according to one’s profession.
“You understand we have a lot of mining activities happening here, some of which are illegal and damaging our flora and fauna, so in the committee we have those that are in charge of the environment,” he said.
“We want to encourage sustainable mining and we want these miners to be part of the constituency’s development thrust.”
The MP said he was facilitating the building of a clinic in ward 17 (Chikwingwizha).
He encouraged MaShurugwi in and outside the country to join forces and mobilise resources to improve infrastructure in Shurugwi.
Shurugwi is endowed with rich mineral resources.
