Sunday word: God speaks against specified intimacy

PROSPER TINGINI

Many religious people are familiar with the story of the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah in which the Lord our God was so much appalled by the level of immorality that was prevailing in the two cities, he decided to completely destroy them by fire.

All types of fornication were therein the order of the day.

He thereafter sought to give some guidelines that would distinguish the sexual behaviour of humans from that of animals. Leviticus 18:1-30 is dedicated to giving those pointers and I will quote them in full.

And the Lord said to Moses, “Say to the people of Israel, I am the Lord your God. You shall not do as they do in the land of Egypt, where you dwelt, and you shall not do as they do in the land of Canaan, to which I am bringing you.

“You shall not walk in their statutes. You shall do my ordinances and keep my statutes and walk in them. I am the Lord your God. You shall therefore keep my statutes and ordinances by doing which a man shall live: I am the Lord.

“None of you shall approach any one near of kin to him to uncover nakedness. I am the Lord. You shall not uncover the nakedness of your father, which is the nakedness of your mother; she is your mother, you shall not uncover her nakedness.

“You shall not uncover the nakedness of your father’s wife (stepmother); it is your father’s nakedness.

“You shall not uncover the nakedness of your sister, the daughter of your father (stepsister) or the daughter of your mother, whether born at home or born abroad.

“You shall not uncover the nakedness of your son’s daughter or of your daughter’s daughter, for their nakedness is your own nakedness.

“You shall not uncover the nakedness of your mother’s sister, for she is your mother’s near kinswoman.

“You shall not uncover the nakedness of your father’s brother, that is, you shall not approach his wife; she is your aunt.

“You shall not uncover the nakedness of your daughter-in-law; she is your son’s wife, you shall not uncover her nakedness.

“You shall not uncover the nakedness of your brother’s wife; she is yoru brother’s nakedness.

“You shall not uncover the nakedness of a woman and her daughter as well, and you shall not take her son’s daughter or her daughters’ daughter to uncover her nakedness; they are your near kinswoman; it is wickedness.

“You shall not take a woman as a rival wife to her sister, uncovering her nakedness while her sister is alive.

“You shall not approach a woman to uncover her nakedness while she is in her menstrual uncleanness.

“You shall not lie carnally with your neighbour’s wife, and defile yourself with her.

“You shall not give any of your children to devote them by fire to Molech, and so profane the name of your God: I am the Lord.

“You shall not lie with a male as with a woman; it is an abomination.

“You shall not lie with any beast and defile yourself with it, neither shall any woman give herself to a beast to lie with it: it is perversion.

“Do not defile yourselves by any of these things, for by all these the nations I am casting out before you have defiled themselves, and the land became defiled, so that I punished its iniquity (like Sodom and Gomorrah), and the land vomited out its inhabitants.

“But you shall keep my statutes and my ordinances and do none of these abominations, either the native or the stranger who sojourns among you, for all these abominations the men of the land did, who were before you, so that the land became defiled; lest the land vomit you out, when you defile it, as it vomited out the nation that was before you.

“For whoever shall do any of these abominations, the person that do them shall be cut off from among their people. So keep my charge never to practice any of these abominable customs which were practiced before you, and never to defile yourself by them” I am the Lord your God”.

God has meticulously demarcated the boundaries prohibited for our romantic indulgences.

Anything practiced alongside these perimeters is considered as an abomination or perversion.

These are nations and cities of the world in which the sexual moralities within them are akin to those that led to the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah by the Lord.

In fact, some of them have enacted legislations giving protection to some of these practices labelled as abominations. Any condemnations of such forbidden practices are often met with vociferous reprisals that can lead one to be sanctioned one way or the other.

Stronger nations who have embraced sexual immoralities and have made such things part of their systems are now victimizing smaller nations, who have outlawed such abominations to be in line with God’s directives.

Friendship or cooperation is sometimes only open when you tow the line of the free-world ideology; free of God and free to sin.

The sanctity of sexual contacts and religious righteousness has been overtaken by the quest for human rights, without limits. Advocates of human rights do not consider the spoken words of God to be of any consequence.

They dismiss such religious links and give freedom of moral behavior more prominence than abiding by the statutes of the Lord.

You are branded all sorts of backwardness for not encompassing the concept of human freedom to choose partners of similar sex.

What has become even more astounding is that some of our Christian denominations who purport to read and follow the same Bible scriptures we claim to be our guiding religious principles are now giving stamps of approval to some of the specified sexual liaisons of abomination.

The churches are unbelievably solemnising same sex marriages under the pretext of the adherence to the laws of nations that have legalised such. I would rather follow God than to follow man. “Do not do as they do”, said the Lord.

Please note that the above comments are my personal opinions and should not be attributed whatsoever to be the views of this newspaper.
