FC Platinum, Caps the big winners

Sport
FC Platinum claimed their second victory as they sailed past fellow miners and defending champions Ngezi Platinum Stars at Baobab Stadium on Saturday.

FC PLATINUM and Caps United were the biggest winners among the Castle Premier Soccer League giants as newsboys Arenel Movers and TelOne continued to show that they are up for the challenge.

FC Platinum claimed their second victory as they sailed past fellow miners and defending champions Ngezi Platinum Stars at Baobab Stadium on Saturday.

The Norman Mapeza-coached side dismissed league debutants Chegutu Pirates 1-0 at Mandava in their first game, becoming the only team to win their first two games in the 18-team league.

Following the 1-0 defeat to Chicken Inn in their first game at Bata Stadium, Caps United once again took to the road to pick up their first set of points when they edged Herentals at Nyamhunga Stadium in Kariba on Saturday.

Newboys TelOne also registered victory with a 3-1 win over last year’s championship contenders Manica Diamonds.

Last week, the WiFi Boys held ZPC Kariba to a 2-2 draw at Nyamhunga.

Arenel Movers have fired some warning shots in the top league after they held champions Ngezi Platinum to a goalless draw in their first game, and on Saturday repeated the same feat, frustrating the GameCocks to yet another goalless stalemate at the same stadium, Luveve, on Saturday.

Despite that show, Arenel are yet to score and coach Farai Tawachera says he is working on it.

“There is only one thing I need to work on, transition from defence to attack. We just need to spruce it up,” he said.

“Remember, this team never played any friendly matches. We could have picked those things during preparations. We did not get that opportunity. Now we are seeing it and it is for us to go back, work on it and perfect it.”

The sweets makers are remaining at Luveve Stadium next weekend to host Herentals.

There was no joy for Highlanders, Dynamos and Chicken Inn over the weekend.

Highlanders were held to a 1-1 draw by Bulawayo Chiefs at Barbourfields Stadium on Sunday, while Dynamos surrendered a 2-0 lead to settle for a 2-2 draw with Hwange at the same venue on Saturday.

Chicken Inn were held by Arenel, while another draw was played by Simba Bhora and Green Fuel, in a game which ended 1-1 on Saturday.
