Machete gang hijacks Byo motorist after fake hire

Machete

A FIVE-MAN machete gang last week hijacked a 38-year-old Bulawayo man’s vehicle after pretending to hire his services.

The gang took the car and drove off, taking with them a laptop, three cellphones, and a driver’s licence.

Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Abednico Ncube confirmed the incident on Friday.

“Investigations are being carried out by police into a case of car hijacking which took place at Kensington, Bulawayo. The complainant is a 38-year-old man of Riverside suburb, who had parked his Mazda 323 vehicle, ivory in colour, at Mac’s Garage along Leopold Takawira Avenue.

“He was approached by five unknown male adults on the pretext that they wanted to hire the car to a Sabbath church in Kensington suburb,’’ Ncube said.

He had charged them US$10 for the hire and the money was to be paid on arrival.

“On arrival, the gang produced machetes and assaulted the complainant. The complainant escaped into the darkness. He sustained bruises on the left-hand finger. They took the car and drove off. Inside the car, there was a black bag that contained a laptop, three cellphones and the complainant’s driver’s licence. The total value stolen is US$2 150 and nothing was recovered,’’ Ncube said.
