ED mourns Geingob

Mnangagwa said the region had lost a liberation stalwart and an icon.

PRESIDENT Emmerson Mnangagwa has sent a condolence message to the people of Namibia following President Hage Geingob’s death yesterday.

Geingob died at the age of 82, less than three weeks after the announcement that he was undergoing cancer treatment.

Mnangagwa said the region had lost a liberation stalwart and an icon.

“We in Zimbabwe fondly remember President Geingob as a pan-Africanist, a liberation hero and a visionary statesman who served his people with utmost distinction,” Mnangagwa said.

He applauded the role Geingob played in maintaining cordial relations between Zimbabwe and Namibia.

“President Geingob bequeaths to posterity an invaluable legacy which we must preserve and hand down to successive young generations, particularly his tenacious commitment to freedom, justice, African dignity, solidarity and mutual tolerance,” he said.

Meanwhile, Mnangagwa is today expected to meet with Botswana president Mokgweetsi Eric Keabetswe Masisi for the 4th Session of the two countries' Bi-National Commission.

According to a statement issued by Botswana's ministry of foreign affairs, the engagement will end on February 9 when the Heads of State Session will be held.

On the agenda will be agriculture; mining; security; trade and investment; tourism just to mention a few.

“The BNC is a key bilateral mechanism that facilitates co-operation between Botswana and Zimbabwe in areas such as, agriculture; mining; security; trade and investment; tourism; immigration and transport."

“Accordingly, the 4th Session of the Botswana-Zimbabwe BNC, will afford the two leaders an opportunity to review progress on the implementation of bilateral co-operation commitments, as well as, explore ways of broadening the scope of collaboration between the two countries and people,” the statement said.

Botswana and Zimbabwe enjoy a strong friendship and excellent bilateral relations which are founded on shared historical, socio-economic and cultural ties.

The two countries established diplomatic ties in 1983.
