Massive water programme for Victoria Falls

Local
Victoria Falls mayor Prince Thuso Moyo revealed the programme to Southern Eye, adding that the plan was necessitated by damaged and ageing water pipes that led to erratic pumping and distribution of water in some parts of the town.

AUTHORITIES in Victoria Falls have kick-started a US$4 million water reservoir project in Mkhosana set to eradicate water challenges in one of Zimbabwe prime tourist destinations.

The reservoir project is the first phase of the US$15 million plan on water, sanitation, and hygiene programme.

Victoria Falls mayor Prince Thuso Moyo revealed the programme to Southern Eye, adding that the plan was necessitated by damaged and ageing water pipes that led to erratic pumping and distribution of water in some parts of the town.

He said the project was the first phase of an 18-month project that includes a water, and sewage services revamping programme.

“Funds were raised through the sale of a stand where we raised US$4,8 million. Another stand worth US$2 million is still going through the tender system where we also hope to channel all the proceeds to the same project,” Moyo said.

He said the authorities had no problem with water sources indicating that they were drawing water from the Zambezi River.

According to the 2022 population census, the city had a population of 35 199.

However, the situation in Victoria Falls is a microcosm of Zimbabwe’s water problems stemming from climate change challenges and local and central government struggles to supply water to residents.

Major cities and towns in Zimbabwe are bedevilled by water challenges that have made them susceptible to waterborne diseases.

The country is currently battling a serious cholera outbreak.

Victoria Falls is one of the grandest waterfalls in the world, pouring from the heart of the Zambezi River.

The Zambezi is the fourth largest river on the continent, spanning 2 700km.
