A 37-YEAR-OLD Bulawayo woman has been sentenced to 595 hours of community service for defrauding the Econet Majority Burial Society — EcoSure — of US$4 000.

Similo Moyo pleaded guilty to two counts of fraud when she appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Maxwell Ncube on Monday.

The magistrate convicted and sentenced her to 16 months in jail for the first count.

Three months of the sentence were suspended for five years on condition of good behaviour.

Another five months were suspended on condition that she restitutes the complainant of US$2 000 before July 3.

The remaining eight months were suspended on condition she performs 280 hours of community service at Western Commonage Magistrates Court.

For the second count, she was sentenced to 12 months in jail and three months were suspended for five years on condition of good behaviour.

Nine months were suspended on condition she performs 315 hours of community service also at Western Commonage Court.

The court was told that on October 10, Moyo filed a fraudulent funeral claim with Econet Life Majority Burial Society.

The total value defrauded was US$2 000 and nothing was recovered.

On May 15 this year, she made another fake claim of US$2 000.
