Zimbabwe’s football fraternity was plunged into mourning yesterday following the death of former national team and Dynamos striker David George.
Popularly known as Broom Boy, George died in Harare after a long battle illness. He was 71.
"It's a sad day for the Zimbabwe football losing a legend like David George,” said one of his associates, who asked not to be named as he was not authorised to speak by the family.
“I am still shocked at the news but what I know is he has not been feeling well for some time.”
George was living at his Glen Norah A home where mourners are gathered.
Broom Boy was born in Mbare in 1952 and began his football career playing for team such as Nimfa Rovers, and Mutanga Rovers before he joined Dynamos around 1975.
George was part of the DeMbare team that won five of six cup tournaments namely the league title, Nyore Nyore Charity Shield, BAT Rosebowl, Castle Cup and Southern African Champions of Champions Cup in 1976. He played along the likes of goalkeeper Matthew Mwale, Shadreck Ngwenya, Shepherd Murape, Sunday Chidzambwa, Isaac Nhema, Simon Sachiti, Shaw ‘Kojak’ Handriade and Kuda Muchemeyi, George ‘Mastermind’ Shaya, Ernest ‘Nyamuzihwa’ Kamba, Oliver ‘Monitoring Force’ Kateya and Daniel ‘Dhidhidhi’ Ncube, among many Dynamos greats.
George would go on to play for Dynamos until 1983 when he hung his boots following an injury.

The late dribbling wizard was Chidzambwa's assistant when DeMbare reached the finals of the 1998 Caf Champions League and also deputised David Mandigora in the same competition in 2007 when the Glamour Boys reached the semifinals.
