Chiduuro wins inaugural Zvobgo memorial golf day

Sport

Young Harare amateur golfer Shepherd Chiduuro walked away with gold at the inaugural Eddison and Julia Zvobgo memorial golf day at The Country Club in the capital on Thursday.

Politician Eddison Zvobgo was Zimbabwe’s first Justice minister after independence, serving the country until his demise in 2004.

Drawing over a hundred amateur golfers from all over the country, the competition was stiff but Chiduuro’s consistency which saw him not blanking any hole, gave him the edge to finish with 40 points. With a handicap of 23, the gold medalist made 4 under.

Chiduuro was just a point above T Sithole thanks to his sharp game which saw him a point at three holes.

Winners walked away with the latest appliances including bar refrigerators, ice makers, water dispensers, blenders, ice crushers and air fryers.

Eddison and Julia Zvobgo Trust treasurer Chengetai Zvobgo said the golf day was set to be an annual event with the date for 2025 already set for October.

“We have enjoyed tremendous support from the corporate world including members of the legal fraternity, family and friends for the inaugural edition and the plan is to pull together resources for an even bigger event next year,” he said in an interview at the prize giving ceremony.

Speaking at the prize giving ceremony, Tendai Zvobgo Watungwa said the Trust had already started preparations for another edition of the gold day with the hope to attract professional golfers from all over the world in the future.

Gold administrator Marcia Mwashita said the turnout was above satisfactory given the few days her team had to put together the event.

“Normally one would struggle to register 80 golfers but we have done more than 100 in just a few days. The course is quite big and perfect at the moment, our greens and fairway are on point thanks to the rains and this just makes the game even more beautiful,” she said.
