Chawonza bounces back as Dembare boss

Sport
Chawonza left the club in 2024 amid tension within the executive and his departure was followed with the departure of sponsors Rouxgold while Hello Paisa and Sakunda scaled down their sponsorship.

Former Dynamos vice chairman Vincent Chawonza is on the verge of returning to Dembare albeit in a higher position as the club's chairman.

Sources at Dynamos revealed that Chawonza is a favourite with one of the team's major sponsors who have given a condition for continued sponsorship should he be tasked with leading the club.

The club is at the moment under the leadership of Moses Maunganidze with long serving official Webster Marechera as the secretary general.

Although Chawonza could not be reached to shed light on this development, Dynamos club chairman Bernard Marriot said he was happy with the current club leadership but revealed there were one or two holes which needed to be plucked.

"I am happy with the set up at Dynamos. We are preparing for the new season but there are one or two holes which need patching within the executive," said Marriot.

Ironically, Marriot's response comes amid reports that there is turmoil in their camp with players last week having boycotted training and demanding that they be paid their January salaries and outstanding sign on fees from the 2024 season.

The players have since returned to training but most of the team's new acquisitions for the year 2025 are still to receive their sign-on-fees a week before the Castle Challenge match against PSL champions, Simba Bhora.

Chawonza left the club in 2024 amid tension within the executive and his departure was followed with the departure of sponsors Rouxgold while Hello Paisa and Sakunda scaled down their sponsorship.

Before his departure, Chawonza had suggested that Dynamos set up a fund to support its junior development programme so that the club would not have to rely or spend too much on the transfer market.

Marriot has a history of appointing a new leadership or new members of the executive before the start of the season every year.

Dynamos followers, however, are in agreement that Dembare needs a far much stronger leadership as they will be fighting on two fronts in the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League as well as in the CAF Confederation Cup.

The team's supporters have not known happiness since 2014 when they last won the Castle Lager Premiership title under the coaching guidance of Kalisto Pasuwa.

Since then, successive leaderships and successive coaches have taken over the reigns but the results have always been the same with only the Chibuku Super Cup success in 2023 and 2024 to talk of.
