ZIFA assures support to ZWPSL

ZIMBABWE Football Association (ZIFA) president Nqobile Magwizi has assured Zimbabwe Women Premier Soccer League (ZWPSL) of the association's full support.

This comes after the unveiling of a US$10 000 sponsorship for women's football from local company Ponera Construction Private Limited.

Magwizi told the league's boss Theresa Maguraushe that his administration will do everything possible to aid women's football.

"Madam Maguraushe, we are excited for the work you are doing in women's football. You are assured that support will continue to come to the women's league, and we are looking forward to doing more work in that respect so that we can grow our women's football in Zimbabwe," Magwizi said.

Magwizi cited neighbouring countries like Zambia, which have made significant strides in developing women's football. He expressed hope that Zimbabwe could follow suit and produce continental stars.

"There are countries around us that have done very well. If you look at Zambia, how they have developed the women. In fact, the African player of the year is a Zambian woman," he added.

"They have done very well. And I see us getting to that place where Zimbabwe can develop continental stars. And this is the sort of support we need, if not global stars. This is the support we need to be able to get there."

ZWPSL chairperson Maguraushe thanked ZIFA for facilitating the sponsorship and Ponera Construction for their timely intervention.

"We want to really appreciate Bonera Construction for coming to us in this difficult time," Maguraushe said.

"It's just like a poor man living in a shack, just to be told that you are now living in a palace. It is really a good development for women's football. This sponsorship is going to benefit our clubs, our players and everyone else associated with women's football."

The league kicked off yesterday and there will be one match today.
