Radnor Mine fosters environment protection

In harmony with nature.......ongoing open cast mining activities at Radnor Mine

Leading gold producer Radnor Mine which is operated by ZimCn Investments has emphasised sustained environment protection as they continue growing their mining ventures in the Makaha area of Mutoko in Mashonaland East Province.

Speaking to Standard Lifestyle, the mining company’s projects manager Collins Musarurwa said environment protection is at the core of their operations.

“We are sensitive to environment protection in our work and we have ensured that we co-exist with nature and the community as we go about our business. Yes, mining is important for economic growth but equally important is that we preserve the environment," he said.

"At this stage, we are fully invested in open-cast mining but our policy is that we must respect the environment and preserve it at all costs. Assessments done by government departments like Environment Management Agency (EMA) have given us a clean bill and we are proud of that record as seen by the thriving natural environment right next to the plant and all our mining activities.”

The multi-award-winning company’s executive chairman Collins Mnangagwa said the mining company remains committed to environment protection and community development as they entrench economic growth through their work.

“Radnor Mine is run by ZimCn Investments and from a policy perspective we have deliberately pushed for operations that ensure protection of the environment, at the same time contributing to community development and economic growth," Mnangagwa said.

"We have generations coming after us and we must at all times preserve what nature gave us. Our operations are above board and we adhere to set government policies and regulations as we go about our business. The goal is to ensure a viable and sustainable mining industry that contributes to national development.”

Radnor Mine has continued on a steady growth after it was officially opened by the President Emmerson Mnangagwa in June 2022. Senior partner at gold giant Tapiwa Chipembere said the official opening which saw the commissioning of a gold crushing plant has helped create employment while having some positive effects on the local authority and Mashonaland East Province at large.

“We are going all out with this venture and we are happy to have created close to 200 jobs directly and many more are being created indirectly. This speaks to the leaving-no-one and-no-place-behind as promulgated by the president," he said.

We want to build a legacy of excellence and productivity, hence our policies continue to dovetail on set parameters by government as well as mining and environment protection players in country.”

The multi-million-dollar mining project has made massive investments to ensure smooth operations including a US$3.5 million acquisition of mine dump trucks to enhance production in early 2022. The gold crushing plant commissioned by the President also offers support to local miners that get assistance in processing their small-scale mining produces.

The company has also been commended for other community-centered projects like road rehabilitation, donation of sanitary pads as well as dust control with other key corporate social investment initiatives lined up during the festive season moving into 2024.
