Rising artist Leopatra Reid, known as JustLeo, unveiled her debut single and music video Kummawa during an elegant launch event at  a top Harare restaurant recently. The gathering drew an array of music lovers and industry stakeholders, who witnessed the introduction of a fresh talent poised to make waves in Zimbabwe’s music scene.

National Arts Council of Zimbabwe (NACZ) communications and marketing manager Agga Nyabinde, was among the distinguished guests and commended JustLeo’s exceptional work. “This music video is simply remarkable, especially coming from someone new to the industry,” said Nyabinde.

“Its artistic quality is outstanding, from the choreography and filming locations to the authentic representation of African culture. This is exactly the kind of work that deserves a spot at the National Arts Merit Awards (NAMAs). Productions like this have the potential to elevate Zimbabwean musicians on the global stage.”

Kummawa blends traditional African beats with modern pop elements, showcasing Just Leo’s powerful vocals alongside the rhythmic expertise of the celebrated percussion group, Djembe Monks. Sung in Chichewa, the song highlights the cultural and linguistic diversity of Zimbabwe while celebrating African heritage.

The music video which was crafted by Andy Cutta enhances the song’s message through vivid visuals, incorporating traditional attire, bold African-inspired makeup, and breathtaking locations.

JustLeo’s creative vision reflects her deep appreciation for the continent’s beauty that has to be shown off to the world.

Over the past decade, Leo has honed her skills, performing cover songs across Victoria Falls, Zambia, and Botswana. Reflecting on her journey, she shared, “This song represents my roots and my journey as an artist. With Kummawa, I wanted to create something that speaks to the soul of Africa and highlights its beauty.”

Sandra Gilbert, Leo’s mother and manager, revealed that her daughter’s musical talent was evident from a young age. “Leopatra’s singing has always been extraordinary. Even as a child, she sang effortlessly. Watching her share her gift with the world is a proud moment for me,” she said.

The event, which attracted industry professionals and cultural enthusiasts, also saw Leo announce her plans to release two more tracks in January. She expressed her commitment to exploring Zimbabwean languages in her upcoming music, further solidifying her dedication to promoting African culture through her work.

Kummawa is now available on all major streaming platforms, offering a fresh, innovative sound. As JustLeo steps into the spotlight, her artistry, passion for cultural storytelling, and fusion of traditional and modern influences signal a bright future in the music industry.
